Microsoft released for Visual Studio 2008 in August 2008, which added:

• Setup and Installation: Installing VS 2008 was a lengthy, multi-disc process (for the physical media version) that often required specific service packs (SP1) to fix installation bugs. It was notorious for "DLL Hell" issues if other Microsoft software was installed.
• The 64-bit Gap: While you could build 64-bit applications, the IDE itself was 32-bit. This meant memory limitations were real. If you had a massive solution, the devenv.exe process could easily crash if it hit the 2GB memory limit.
• WPF Designer: While it existed, the visual designer for WPF in VS 2008 was slow and clunky. It often failed to render complex data-bound UIs, forcing developers to hand-code XAML.
